Silent in Zoom?
A recording you can hear in Signal shows that this browser receives sound from that input. Zoom may still use another device or lack its own permission. Follow the checks for the Zoom version you use.
Compare with a free microphone testKeep the working input as your reference
In Signal, note the selected microphone, speak normally and listen to a short recording. Then stop the test to release the microphone before opening Zoom. If playback is silent here too, use the general recording checks first.
Use the same device and connection when comparing. A browser recording does not prove that Zoom receives audio, that other participants can hear it or that the microphone works in every application.
If you use the Zoom desktop app
Open Zoom’s Settings → Audio. Select the reference device under Microphone and run its microphone test. During a meeting, the arrow beside Mute/Unmute lets you change inputs. Check physical mute switches as well as the meeting control. A host restriction may require the host to allow unmuting. These checks follow Zoom’s desktop troubleshooting guidance.
If the device is missing, check operating-system permission. On Windows, open microphone privacy settings and allow microphone access for desktop apps. On macOS, check Privacy & Security → Microphone for Zoom. Setting names vary by system version; see Zoom’s macOS permission instructions. Restart Zoom after changing permission if it requests this.
If you use Zoom in a browser
Allow microphone access for the Zoom meeting site itself. Permission granted to Signal does not grant it to Zoom. Check the browser’s site permission control on the Zoom page. The operating system must also permit the browser to use the microphone. Zoom documents both permission layers.
On Windows, check Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone. On macOS, check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone for the browser you are using. Choose the intended input in Zoom’s audio controls, join meeting audio and unmute. Grant only the device access you need; this microphone check does not require a camera or screen sharing.
Verify sound inside Zoom
In the desktop app’s Audio settings, use Test speaker to check output and Test microphone to listen to playback. If the joining dialog offers Test speaker and microphone, use it before joining audio. A moving meter alone is insufficient: confirm that you hear the replay. See Zoom’s audio test instructions.
After a successful local test, ask a participant whether they can hear you. If Zoom’s replay works but the meeting stays silent, record the selected input, mute state, app/browser version and exact error for support. Avoid sharing private recordings. Leave the meeting and stop any test when finished.
About this guide
Independent Signal guidance, reviewed against the linked Zoom documentation on 4 October 2026. Signal is not affiliated with Zoom. Menu names and available controls can change. The instructions were checked against those sources; a Zoom meeting and every operating-system variant were not tested here.
This page requests no microphone access and loads no advertising scripts. Signal’s general audio guide offers optional advertising separately. The free test processes audio in your browser.
